General Information

Members and guests of the Theoretical Physics Group at Berkeley Lab have access to a number of computing resources. These include:

  • A webserver providing Personal Web Pages, and wikis for working groups. Contact management to describe your needs.
  • A Subversion repository to facilitate collaboration on papers or on code.
  • A centralized backup system for macintoshes, including laptops
  • Euler -- A High Performance cluster for performing CPU intensive calculations, including MPI computation. For accounts on this cluster, see management.

New Users should start by reading the Quick Start Guide.

This guide, along with the FAQ should answer most questions you'll have.

System Status and Other News

  • 12 / 14 / 09 -- Power will go down in Bldg 50 from 6PM until 6AM each day from now until 12 / 23 / 09. From 12 / 28 / 09 until 1 / 1 / 10 power will be totally out in Bldg 50. These outages will effect thmath, thmath2, thsrv. Printing from the linux systems will also be unavailable during these times, as will the Macintosh Timemachine service and the Euler cluster. Also, the global scratch area will be inaccessible. Otherwise, the linux workstations should function normally.
  • 10 / 5 / 09 -- Subversion repository setup for collaboration. Ask Management for details.
  • 9 / 25 / 09 -- All machines run Scientific Linux 5.
  • 5 / 11 / 09 -- Mathematica upgrades -- thmath2 and thmath3 now run Mathematica 7. You can still run Mathematica 5 or 6 on these machines if you prefer by using the commands 'math.5 or mathematica.5' and 'math.6 or mathematica.6'
  • 1 / 10 / 07 -- There is a third mathematica server, thmath3.lbl.gov available. This provides two Mathematica processes in addition to those running on thmath and thmath2. All the mathematica servers are now running version 5.2.
  • 10 / 10 / 06 -- The copy machine in 50A-5101 has a scan function. You can scan documents into it and have the output emailed (in pdf form) to any address you like. Read the Scanner HOWTO for instructions.
  • 11 / 30 / 05 -- CERNLIB, ROOT and various other collider physics computing tools are now installed on all workstations. See the FAQ for details.
  • 10 / 28 / 04 -- The Laboratory IMAP server will require that you use SSL to access your email starting Nov 2, 2004. Visit https://commons.lbl.gov/display/itfaq/Email for instructions on configuring your email client.
  • 10 / 13 / 99 -- The email policy is now in force. The only theory group linux computer that receives mail from outside of LBL is thsrv.lbl.gov. Do not tell people to send mail to any other workstation, as it will not be delivered. Everyone should have an LBL Electronic Postoffice address of the form MyName@lbl.gov and should use this as his email address. Please read the FAQ for information on how to register for such an address if you don't have one.
  • 9 / 2 /99 -- Users who are over quota get nightly email messages. If you receive such a message but take no action, you will eventually be unable to login to X. If this happens, your only option is to ssh or telnet from someone else's terminal, or from an X-terminal, and delete files. Don't count on management fixing this problem for you. You receive warnings for a full week before the system restricts your disk access. It is your responsibility to take action.
