{"id":6846,"date":"2015-01-23T22:41:51","date_gmt":"2015-01-24T06:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www-theory.lbl.gov\/wordpress\/?page_id=6846"},"modified":"2026-02-10T11:28:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T19:28:17","slug":"zoltan-ligeti","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www-theory.lbl.gov\/?page_id=6846","title":{"rendered":"Zoltan Ligeti"},"content":{"rendered":"<div  class=\"x-container max width\" style=\"line-height: 8px\"><p><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"x-img x-img-thumbnail none\"  src=\"https:\/\/www-theory.lbl.gov\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ligeti-144.jpg\" ><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Zoltan Ligeti<\/p>\n<p>Email:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto: ligeti@berkeley.edu\">ligeti[at]berkeley.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Office: 50A-5115, OLC 423<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www-theory.lbl.gov\/~ligeti\">Personal web page<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><div  class=\"x-container max width\" ><h1  class=\"h-custom-headline mtn h3 accent\" ><span>Biography<\/span><\/h1><p>Zoltan Ligeti received his undergraduate education at the Eotvos University in Hungary, and his Ph.D. at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.\u00a0 He was the McCone Postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech from 1994-97, then a postdoc at UC San Diego, before joining Fermilab in 1998, and moving to Berkeley in 2000.\u00a0 He has worked on flavor physics, beyond standard model scenarios, neutrinos, and dark matter.\u00a0 He received the DOE Outstanding Junior Investigator Award, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.<\/p>\n<h1  class=\"h-custom-headline h3 accent\" ><span>Research interests<\/span><\/h1><p>I have broad interests in particle physics, including the physics of the LHC, dark matter detection, flavor physics, CP violation, and neutrinos. \u00a0Most of my recent research focuses on theoretical questions about &#8220;indirect&#8221; searches for new physics. \u00a0Yet undiscovered particles can influence measurements via virtual effects due to the uncertainty principle. \u00a0Such searches for new physics were very successful in the past; for example, effects of the top quark were measured much before it was directly discovered. \u00a0Quark and lepton decays (especially flavor-changing neutral currents and CP violation) already probe mass scales comparable and possibly well above LHC energies, depending on the details of the underlying physics. \u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">A clear empirical evidence for new physics comes from the observed\u00a0<\/span>baryon asymmetry of the Universe, which requires CP violation beyond the\u00a0standard model. \u00a0In the next decade the\u00a0sensitivity of many measurements that can reveal new sources of CP\u00a0violation and virtual effects of new heavy particles will increase\u00a0100-fold or more, enhancing the sensitivity to new phenomena to several\u00a0times shorter distance scales (higher energy scales) than we can access\u00a0today. \u00a0I pursue several research directions toward better understanding\u00a0the predictions of the standard model relevant for upcoming\u00a0experiments, devising new observables sensitive to new physics, and\u00a0studying the influence of beyond standard model scenarios on upcoming measurements and their synergies and complementarity with the\u00a0LHC new particle searches.<\/p>\n<p><h1  class=\"h-custom-headline h3 accent\" ><span>Selected publications<\/span><\/h1><\/p>\n<p>(Full list of publications can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/inspirehep.net\/search?ln=en&amp;ln=en&amp;p=f+a+z.+ligeti&amp;of=hb&amp;action_search=Search&amp;sf=&amp;so=d&amp;rm=&amp;rg=25&amp;sc=0\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Precision Global Determination of the B\u2192Xs \u03b3 Decay Rate,<br \/>\nwith F.
