ABSTRACT:

Searches for the permanent Electric Dipole Moments (EDMs) of the neutron, neutral atoms, and molecules provide deep probes of the breaking of CP symmetry in extensions of the Standard Model. After briefly reviewing theoretical challenges and recent progress in hadronic matrix elements needed to connect EDMs to new sources of CP violation, I will illustrate the constraining power of EDMs on non-standard CP violating interactions of the Higgs and top quark. Working in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory, I will discuss EDM constraints in the context of collider observables, precision electroweak tests, and flavor physics. Along the way, I will illustrate how current hadronic and nuclear uncertainties impact our ability to probe new physics through EDMs.
