Event Details

The axion is a strongly theoretically motivated particle. The axion coupling to electromagnetism leads tomany interesting phenomena, providing possibilities for their direct or indirect detection. On the direct detectionside, we propose a new experimental target: axions emitted in the magnetosphere of pulsars. The signal is emittedat the pulsar rotation frequency and is highly coherent. Thus, experimental searches benefit from a higher signalquality and known signal frequency. We modeled the axion signal in two limits: a vacuum magnetosphere anda mostly unscreened magnetosphere. For the Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavity experiment, theprojected sensitivity is stronger than current constraints on axions with massesm1013eV. On the indirectdetection side, we consider axion dark matter that decays by emitting two photons and propose to search fora decay signal with the X-ray mission Einstein Probe planned for launch this year. We propose an observingstrategy for dark matter decay within the Milky Way halo and model the observations with the Einstein Probe. The projected sensitivity is an order-of-magnitude better than the current X-ray bounds on axions in the 1-5 keVmass range.
